Train Ride to Chicago

Rest At Aunt Becky'sMy aunts, Becky and Joy, sent us off from the Newbern train station. They were so nice to ride us to the train station. They stood on the train car’s platform waved as the trained pulled out of the station. It was so “black and white movie”. The picture is Katherine sleeping on Aunt Becky’s floor prior to us heading to the Newbern train station.

The train left the station almost as soon as it arrived. We had not gotten into our room before the train had pulled out of the station.

As we put our bags away, we could see that the pullman porter had already turned down our bed.

Katherine Elizabeth slept through most of the night in her car seat on the floor of the room.Katherine On The Train

The pullmen porter brought our breakfast to the room so we could get ready to disembark in Chicago.

As we neared Chicago, we could see the Sears Tower disappearing into the clouds. Wow! It sure is a tall building.

We arrived at Union Station, which is a famous land mark in Chicago.

Heading to Dyersburg to Catch the Train

The whole family is hopping on the train to Colorado.

I have to work in Colorado Springs for the week.

We are heading to Dyersburg, because my Aunt Becky and Aunt Joy (my dad's sisters) live in Dyersburg. Otherwise, we would get on the train in Memphis. The distance is about the same, but the arrival and departure times would be better in Memphis. But, we enjoy our time with my aunts.

Our Amtrak train ride will take us from Dyersburg to Chicago and then onto Denver.

End of the Baseball Season

Well, it is finally the end of the baseball season. To mark the passing, we are heading over to Allison and Steve Tofflemire’s house to watch Monday Night Football.

Monday Night Football you ask? Well, we had hope that tonight would have been another night of baseball, but it is not to be so. The Boston Red Sox walked all over the Colorado Rockies in a sweep of the World Series.

So tonight, we start looking forward to next season.

Upgrade House with Kick'n Theater System

Karen and I upgraded the home theater system. Back on my birthday in August, Karen gave me an AppleTV, which gave me the green light for upgrading home entertainment.

So, the search began.

I was looking to have a setup that would support the current standards for video. I focused my attention on the HDMI standard 1.3a, which would provide me with an integrated video and audio experience on a single cable. This HDMI standard handles all of the capabilities of the Blu-ray and HD DVD players. According to Joseph D. Cornwall of Impact Acoustics,

“The HDMI 1.3a standard increases single-link bandwidth to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbps), which will support demands of future HD display devices incorporating higher resolutions, Deep Color and high frame rates. Keep in mind that previous versions of HDMI are fully capable of 1080p performance.

HDMI 1.3a incorporates automatic audio syncing (lip sync) capability. This is a system that will automatically adjust for the difference in electronic latency between the processing circuits of the sound and image. This discrepancy sometimes manifests itself as a slight delay in the sound compared to the image.

HDMI 1.3a supports output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio streams for external decoding by AV receivers. TrueHD and DTS-HD are lossless audio codec formats used on HD DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. If the disc player can decode these streams into uncompressed audio, then HDMI 1.3 is not necessary, as all versions of HDMI can transport uncompressed audio.”

What does all that mean? It boils down to one thing. You get more with the latest standards. So, I started looking around for devices that support HDMI 1.3a, which turns out to be not that many.

I started with the A/V receiver thinking it would be the centerpiece of controlling the system. I started reviewing the high-end Sony receivers, but I saw too many bad reviews. A friend put me onto the Yamaha receivers and I liked what I saw.

I wanted either the Yamaha RX-V1800 or the Yamaha RX-V3800. The key difference is the network capability of the Yamaha RX-V3800. But, the Yamaha RX-V3800 only has an RJ-45 jack and I am running 802.11n around my house. Plus, I have an AppleTV, which gives me more than the capabilities of the Yamaha RX-V3800.

With receiver selection out of the way, I moved onto the screen. I had decided that I didn’t want a projection-based system. I work with them at work all the time and I think highly of them, but I don’t want to spend the kind of money required to get the brightness desired. LCD screens don’t have the size and price that I am looking to get. My father was pushing the Pioneer plasmas. At work, I have Panasonic plasmas. The Panasonic doesn’t have blacks as black as the Pioneer. And, I have had failures on some of the Panasonic units. I focused on the Pioneer KURO PDP-6010FD 60" 1080p Plasma HDTV and Panasonic TH-58PZ750U 58" 1080p plasma HDTV when doing my comparisons. The blacker blacks won out, especially since the price difference is so small.

With the screen selected, I wanted to decide on getting a Blu-ray or HD DVD player. I decided to hold off after looking at the players in the marketplace. Every player is limited in capability or overpriced given what you are getting. But, a deal did come available after I had given up. A number of Blu-ray players were being sold with a rebate providing you 5 free Blu-ray movies. The straw that broke my back was Amazon would give you 2 more free movies. Well, I picked the Sony PlayStation 3 (60GB), which is cheap so I wouldn’t mind upgrading in the future and I get 7 Blu-ray movies. You can’t beat $499 and 7 free movies.

I ordered the HD cable box with integrated TiVo with the limited selection of HD that you can get in Huntsville, Alabama on the Knology cable system.

The whole integrated system includes a Mac Mini for Internet access; a PS3 for movies and games; an AppleTV for music, shows, podcasts, and photos; a Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 8300HD cable box for TV and HD recording; a Panasonic DVR for recording; and the Pioneer 60″ plasma for viewing all with wonderful stuff.

Sweet!

Alexander Reunion

Two Katie BethsWe went to Karen's family reunion down in Walker county.

We have two Katie Beths in the family.  That is them in the picture.  It is amazing how different babies are from each other.  Our Katherine Elizabeth is two months old in this pictures.  Leah and Jon's Katie Beth is six months old.  What a difference in size?

The everyone enjoyed themselves.  Karen's uncle even made the trip all the way from Jacksonville, Florida, which was very nice.

Great Birthday Celebration

Brian's BirthdayI turned 41 today.  I had expected a mellow birthday given how busy we have been.  But, it turned into pretty good birthday.
It started with breakfast at Market Street Café.  We strolled from our house with Katherine Elizabeth.  It is about a mile, which make for a nice stroll.  Karen had the Swiss Omelet and I had two eggs, bacon, and biscuit with gravy.  Hmm! What a start for the day.

I ran into work for few hours.  On the way home, I stopped off to get the rest of my birthday dinner at Publix grocery store.  We had already picked up some sushi grade tuna, which we are going to serve as an appetizer.  I was looking for the rest of the meal.  I picked up some fresh green beans, fresh baby carrots, sweet potatoes, and chicken wings.

The chicken wings were to be added to the chicken legs that I had already thawed at home.  The chicken was going to be marinaded in hot sauce and then Dale's sauce, which makes for great chicken.

Some of the tuna will be served sliced with soy sauce and wasabi.  The remaining tuna will be lightly salted and peppered prior to searing it.

The sweet potatoes were baked and served with a pecan orange butter.  The green beans and carrots were steamed then seasoned.

We purchased my birthday cake at The Fresh Market.  We picked out a cake called Mud Cake, which was wonderful.  It was pure chocolate with some flour thrown in the mix.

My parents joined us for the evening.  My dad and I enjoyed Smithwick's ale.

Everyone had a great time, and the gifts were great, too.

11th Anniversary

We kicked back and took a slow ride through our 11th Anniversary.  With Katherine Elizabeth in the family, we stayed home and had a nice dinner and movie.
Guess Who

I picked up the romantic comedy, Guess Who, which stars Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher.  This movie is a good remake on the idea of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner starring Sidney Poitier, Spencer Tracy, and Katherine Hepburn.  Karen and I enjoyed the movie.  I think Karen may have enjoyed the toffee popcorn and chocolate more.

Our 11th Anniversary

It looks like we will be staying home for our 11th anniversary. Karen is concerned about traveling with our new baby girl (born July 2nd). I understand and we will still have fun doing something around home.

My Sister Is In Town

My sister, Hope Jones, is in town with her children for a month. She is jumping at the chance to see Katherine Elizabeth.

Her children have been video chatting with us over the past month. It started with them asking were is the baby. We would show them Karen's belly. After the birth, they wanted the to see Katherine Elizabeth. Who still is manner sleeping.

Her husband will be joining her later during the visit. He is presently attending a number of conferences for this work.
